Travis - Why Does It Always Rain On Me? ============================================== > PRODUCTION + ARRANGEMENT ============================================== - The vocals have more reverb and delay during the chorus. ============================================== > SONGWRITING ============================================== SONG STRUCTURE: Intro | Verse | Pre-Chorus | Chorus | Verse | Pre-Chorus | Chorus | Bridge | Verse | Pre-Chorus | Chorus | Bridge | Extended Chorus Intro: 12 measures Verse 1: 8 measures Pre-Chorus 1: 8 measures Chorus 1: 8 measures Verse 2: 8 measures Pre-Chorus 2: 8 measures Chorus 2: 8 measures Bridge: 8 measures Verse 3: 8 measures Pre-Chorus 3: 8 measures Chorus 3: 8 measures Bridge: 8 measures Extended Chorus: 16 measures - The chord in the verse seems to be a xx999-11. - Chord voicings on the verse are different from typical rhythm guitar voicings: xx9997, xx11-999, and xx999-11. - The second chord of the intro and chorus is the minor v chord. [TROPE: Minor V] * The verse's chord progression is different from the intro's chord progression. This is noteworthy to me since in all 13 of my officially released songs with instrumental intros, the intros always mirror the verse. * "Everybody saying everything's alright" and "I'm seeing a tunnel at the end of all these lights" in the first verse have a bit of an unusually verbose cadence, both on their own but also compared to their counterparts in the second verse. [TROPE: Unusual Cadence] - After "I can't avoid the lightning" in the 2nd chorus, instead of stopping where the 1st chorus did, it goes into what I'd consider the bridge ("Oh, where did the blue skies go? Why is it raining so cold?") * The bridge then leads into the flat VII chord (which, in this case, is D), which then goes into the minor v (Bm), which already appeared before. The Bm transitions into Bm/A before going to Vsus4 -> V to really bring things home. Maybe this is a key change? I don't know. - Verse 3 mostly has no drums. [TROPE: Drums Drop Out] * After the first chorus, it goes right into the 2nd verse. But both the 2nd and 3rd choruses go into the bridge. ============================================== > TROPES ============================================== * Minor V * Unusual Cadence * Drums Drop Out
